Sometimes researchers or commercial fishers may require special permission to undertake activities which would otherwise be prohibited, such as take protected fish or use fishing gear which is prohibited.
There is provision in the Fisheries Resources Management Act for the Minister for Fisheries to allow these usually prohibited activities to be undertaken, such as scientific research or experimental commercial fishing.
For instance, the Minister may exempt a specified person or class of persons from all or any of the provisions of the Act for one or more of these purposes:
research,
environmental protection,
public safety,
public health,
commercial purposes,
community education about and compliance with this Act, and
enforcement of this Act.
