The Western Australian Freedom of Information Act 1992 (FOI Act) gives the public a right to access government documents, subject to some limitations, and applies to the Department of Fisheries.
Individuals can also apply to have personal information about them in government documents amended if that information is inaccurate, incomplete, out of date or misleading.
The object of the FOI Act is to:
The Department administers the FOI Act by:
Assisting the public to obtain access to its documents.
Allowing access to the Department’s documents to be obtained promptly and at the lowest reasonable cost.
Assisting the public to ensure that their personal information contained in the Department’s documents is accurate, complete, up to date and not misleading.
To help members of the public find the information needed, we have provided an Information Statement, which describes:
- The Department's structure and functions.
- The ways in which the Department's functions affect members of the public.
- Arrangements to enable members of the public to participate in formulating the Department's policy and the performance of its functions.
- The types of documents usually held by the Department.
- Our arrangements for giving members of the public access to documents, including details of library facilities.
Applications must:
- Be in writing.
- Provide enough information to enable the requested documents to be identified.
Include an Australian postal address.
Provide any other information or details required under the Freedom of Information Regulations 1993.
Be lodged with the Department with any application fee payable under the regulations.

The best way to make a request under the FOI Act is to print and complete an Application and lodge it by any of the following methods:
