Dr Mathew Hourston currently manages and reports on the introduced marine pest port monitoring projects for the marine biosecurity research and monitoring team at Fisheries. He also contributes to research projects applying novel techniques and technology to enhance the detection and eradication of marine pests.
Before his current role at Fisheries, he worked extensively in nearshore marine and estuarine environments.
Doctor Hourston's Bachelor’s degree majored in both Marine and Environmental Sciences, and his Honours project examined the ecology and biology of selected nearshore fish species.
His PhD thesis was an examination of the local south-west Australian marine and estuarine meiofauna, specifically the free-living Nematoda. This was primarily an ecological examination of the assemblages but also included several taxonomic descriptions.
