Dr Alex Hesp’s main areas of interest and expertise include fish population biology and fisheries stock assessment and modelling.
He completed a PhD at Murdoch University in 2003 on the biology of two sparid species, following an earlier Honours/FRDC-funded study on the biology of West Australian dhufish. He remained at Murdoch University for eight years as a postdoctoral researcher, working mainly on FRDC-funded fisheries projects involving fisheries modelling.
Dr Hesp joined the Department of Fisheries in early 2012, as part of the Stock Assessment and Data Analysis branch.
His current research interests are developing methods for estimating mortality in fish species, the use of agent-based modeling to explore issues relating to recreational fisheries and interactions between marine mammals and fisheries, and various aspects relating to the population biology of temperate fish species.
