Fishers are reminded that the pink snapper closed season has been extended in Cockburn and Warnbro Sounds and now runs from 1 September to 31 January each year.
Fishing for pink snapper, or being in possession of pink snapper while line fishing, in the closed area is prohibited during this time.
The closure extension gives more protection to spawning pink snapper in the Sounds and is considered critical to sustaining adequate breeding stock.
The closed area has also been extended north to Fremantle fishing boat harbour and west to the inside of Five Fathom Bank to provide extra protection to spawning pink snapper.
The latest research shows that pink snapper begin to gather in Cockburn Sound in August and September in readiness to spawn, which is well before the previous start of the closure.
