Squid Research in Cockburn Sound

Squid are fun to catch and taste delicious. That’s why they are targeted by recreational fishers of all ages and skill levels. DPIRD Fisheries scientists are working hard to improve our understanding of their populations and for the past two years have been conducting monthly squid surveys throughout Cockburn Sound, one of the most popular squid fishing locations in WA.

Scientists are researching where and when squid are most abundant, which habitats and depths are they prefer, and how environmental factors such as temperature and water clarity affect catches. A range of biological information has also been gathered to improve the understanding of squid life cycles in Cockburn Sound.

This research is part of the WAMSI Westport Marine Science Program. To find out more, visit our website: https://www.fish.wa.gov.au/Education-and-Partnerships/Partnerships/Pages/WAMSI-Westport-Marine-Science-Program-Cockburn-Sound-research.aspx
