Consultation on the future of fishing at Green’s Pool
Date: Tuesday, 7 April 2009
The Department of Fisheries is calling for submissions from interested people, who have an opinion as to whether or not fishing should be prohibited at popular Green’s Pool.
Green’s Pool is a major tourist attraction, approximately 15 kilometres west of Denmark. It’s located in the William Bay National Park and is popular almost year round for swimming or fishing, due to the protection provided by the surrounding rocky headland.
However, conflict between users has led to a number of requests over several years for fishing to be prohibited. It has been suggested the presence of fishers, as well as fishing hooks and other tackle left behind or lost in the water, are a hazard to swimmers, snorkellers and beach visitors.
Regional Manager South, for the Department of Fisheries, Phil Shaw said before any decision was made on the future of fishing at Green’s Pool, public comment was being sought from as many members as possible in the local Denmark community as well as surrounding areas.
“The proposed prohibition would apply to the take of all marine life by line, net and spear within a defined area (covering approximately 600 metres of beach and headland),” Mr Shaw said.
“We have sent letters and a map of the proposed prohibition area to a large number of community organisations, clubs and other Government departments for comment and we hope as many people as possible will take the opportunity to make submissions.
“Anyone who wants further information or a copy of the letter and a map of the defined area is welcome to call the Department of Fisheries Albany office on 98417766.”
Mr Shaw said submissions should be directed to the following address:
The Chief Executive Officer
Department of Fisheries
Albany Regional Office
Suite 7, Frederick House
70-74 Frederick Street
ALBANY WA 6330
Attention: Noel Chambers
The closing date for submissions will be 29 May 2009, after which all submissions will be presented to the Minister for Fisheries for a determination on the proposal.
