Montebello Islands and Barrow Island marine reserves

Montebello Islands and Barrow Island marine reserves are offshore from Dampier, approximately 125 kilometres west of Karratha.

The marine reserve system includes the following:
  • Montebello Islands Marine Park, consisting of five zone types: 'no-take' sanctuary zones, a special purpose (benthic protection) zone, pearling/aquaculture zones, recreation zones and a general use zone.
  • Barrow Island Marine Park, which is a 'no-take' sanctuary zone.
  • Barrow Island Marine Management Area, consisting of two zone types: a conservation area and an unzoned area.

Recreational fishing can be enjoyed in most areas of the Montebello Islands and Barrow Island marine reserves, but special rules apply in some zones. Ensure you know your zones before you go fishing.

Remember that Statewide recreational fishing rules (such as species, bag and size limits, seasonal closures, gear restrictions and licence requirements) also apply to fishing in the reserves.

The key species likely to be found in the waters of the reserves include spangled emperor, red emperor, Spanish mackerel, coral trout, mangrove jack and squid.

Montebello Islands and Barrow Island marine reserves are offshore and remote. Navigation to the islands should only be attempted in favourable weather conditions and in suitably sized and equipped vessels. You must take adequate supplies as no services or facilities are available on the islands.
