Western rock lobster is Western Australia’s premier seafood resource and the State Government has plans to grow the industry, while returning greater benefits to the Western Australian community.
An innovative plan and industry development package aims to double the value of the western rock lobster industry to achieve a target of $1 billion gross value of production, providing a significant boost to the WA economy.
The western rock lobster fishery was the first fishery in the world to be certified as ecologically sustainable by the international Marine Stewardship Council. Since then it has been re-certified three times, most recently in 2017.
Recent scientific studies have confirmed the WA resource is in excellent shape and there is opportunity to increase the level of fishing.
While moving forward with this plan for growth, the State remains committed to the sustainable management of this world class community resource and ensuring greater future benefit for both the industry and Western Australians.
There will be no changes to the recreational lobster fishing rules as a result of these proposed new arrangements for the commercial fishery.
