Report suspicious fishing activity to FishWatch

FishWatch is a 24 hour a day, seven day a week phone line where you can quickly and easily report sightings and suspicion of illegal fishing activity, as well as reports of aquatic pests and diseases, including fish kills.

Illegal fishing can include someone netting in the river, exceeding their bag or possession limits or taking undersized fish, fishing in a closed area, having more fishing gear in the water than they should, or selling or attempting to sell recreationally caught fish.

In July this year, a member of the public reported to FishWatch an unattended fishing net in the Vasse Wonnerup wetlands containing a large number of fish.

Fisheries officers attended and removed the illegal net. Their following inspections and investigation have lead them to an individual who has since assisted with their enquiries.

This is just one example of a recent report that has resulted in an investigation getting underway.

In the State’s south, Operation Shadowedge commenced in May this year with resources allocated to strategically focus on illegal commercial and recreational fishing activity. Reports and assistance from the public via FishWatch greatly help this operation.

Reports made through FishWatch are treated in strict confidence.

So if you see something that doesn’t look quite right, report it to Fishwatch on 1800 815 507 and help ensure we continue to have fish for the future.
