Get trout and about this spring

It’s a great time of year for anglers to try their hand at freshwater fishing following our release of hundreds of thousands of trout into south-west brooks, rivers, lakes and dams.

Funded by recreational freshwater fishing licence revenue, the trout are bred as part of our carefully managed south-west freshwater stocking program, which we run in close consultation with Recfishwest.

This year alone we are releasing nearly 700,000 rainbow trout fingerlings, 27,000 yearling rainbow and brown trout and nearly 2,400 ex-broodtrock trout into select south-west freshwater locations.

Trout are only stocked into waters with a long history of stocking – in some cases over 100 years.

South-west streams which have been identified as having a high conservation value for native freshwater species are not stocked with trout.

This strikes a balance between providing inland recreational fishing opportunities and protecting conservation values.

Breeding and stocking trout forms the backbone of the popular freshwater fishery, which attracts tourism and provides a boon to the regional economy in the South-west.

The fishery was recently the focus of Recfishwest’s successful TroutFest event at Drakesbrook Weir, Waroona, in which fishers and their families helped release 2,000 trout bred at our Freshwater Research Centre in Pemberton as part of the stocking program.

Anglers aged 16 and over need a freshwater angling licence to fish for freshwater finfish in all inland waters south of Greenough (29°S latitude) and above the tidal influence, including all lakes, dams, rivers and their tributaries.

There is a mixed species daily bag limit of four freshwater finfish and a minimum size limit of 300 mm for both rainbow and brown trout.

For more information see our recreational fishing rules.
