Baldchin groper get a break on the Abrolhos

The Abrolhos Islands annual closed season for baldchin groper runs from 1 November to 31 January (inclusive).

During this period, it is illegal to take, land or be in possession of baldchin groper within the Abrolhos Islands Fish Habitat Protection Area.

This closure applies to recreational and commercial fishers.

Baldchin groper is a species unique to WA. These fish aggregate in shallow waters in the Abrolhos area during the closure period to spawn as the water temperature rises.

Fishing for baldchin groper will re-commence on 1 February 2020.

Make sure you check the rules online or in our recreational fishing guides before heading out fishing.

More information about the Abrolhos can be found in our Abrolhos Islands Information Guide.
