Abalone fishing cancelled for 12 January

Abalone fishers are advised that the recreational abalone fishing day in the West Coast Zone scheduled for 7am to 8am this Saturday, 12 January 2019, has been cancelled.

This action has been taken based on a recommendation from Surf Life Saving WA that the tide and swell forecast may result in unsafe conditions.

Surf Life Saving WA surf prediction modelling indicates potentially unsafe conditions due to a high swell period expected to contribute to substantial wave energy surging over the reef platforms where fishing occurs. These condition can occur even on a sunny day with light winds.

Following a safety review triggered by the deaths of a number of participants in past seasons, the WA Government made changes ahead of last season.

This weekend’s cancellation of fishing is part of these management changes, which are designed to improve the safety of recreational fishers and lifeguards.

The next scheduled abalone fishing day in the West Coast Zone is Saturday, 2 February 2019. An extra fishing day may be added to the end of the current season, depending on whether recreational catches are within the target level.
