Port fishing platform open to Bunbury community

    • Fishing platform at Bunbury Port officially opened to the public
    • Delivers on an election commitment to build a fishing platform for the Bunbury community

The McGowan Government continues to deliver on its election commitments in Bunbury, with a new fishing platform at Bunbury Port open to the public from today.

Ports Minister Alannah MacTiernan and Bunbury MLA Don Punch officially opened the platform today, allowing public access to the Bunbury Outer Harbour for the first time since 2014.

Despite being surrounded by water, nearly all fishing spots in Bunbury are difficult for the elderly, very young and people with a disability to access.

The joint project between Southern Ports, South West Development Commission, the City of Bunbury and South32 provides an easily accessible, safe fishing site for the community.

Southern Ports invested $217,000 into converting the Service Jetty into the community fishing facility, including relocating two mooring vessels to one end to free up significant space along the western end of the platform.

Comments attributed to Ports Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

"The people of Bunbury have been asking for a safe, accessible fishing spot for years, and the McGowan Government has delivered for the community.

"Our investment into this platform opens public access to the Outer Harbour for the first time since 2014.

"Thorough consultation was undertaken during the project development to ensure the platform was designed to suit the mobility needs of all members of the community.

"This is a fantastic example of key stakeholders coming together to deliver a positive outcome for the community."

Comments attributed to Fisheries Minister Peter Tinley:

"Bunbury is one of Western Australia's great coastal communities, but a lack of infrastructure has made it difficult for most people to get out fishing.

"This platform delivers on our election commitment to build an accessible fishing platform for the local communities, and I'm sure will be welcomed by local fishers."

Comments attributed to Bunbury MLA Don Punch:

"I'm really pleased to be part of the Government that continues to deliver for the people of Bunbury.

"I've lobbied hard for this project, because I know the community have been asking for this for years, and everyone should have the opportunity to throw a line in the water if they want to.

"This platform allows for a better fishing experience, and I can't wait to see people out and about enjoying this great new community facility."
